Microsoft's Security Breach Investigation and Mitigation

Microsoft is investigating a security breach that allowed the Midnight Blizzard hacking group, a Russian state-sponsored actor, to access and exfiltrate source code and internal systems. The hackers initially gained access through a password spraying attack, which, despite MFA being enabled, bypassed these security measures in non-production environments due to inadequate privileges allocated to a test account. Microsoft is working to harden its systems and prevent future breaches and has shared detailed threat intelligence and mitigation measures with customers. The source code of some products was accessed, but the extent of the damage is still being assessed, and no customer data is known to have been compromised. This investigation is prompting Microsoft to reassess its security protocols in test environments to be more like the more hardened production environments.
